INVEST IN your MEMORIES

Cake Smash & Splash sessions

The most meaningful way to tell their story and keep these moments forever

Celebrating a special birthday

A cake smash is the most fun photoshoot and a great way to celebrate your little one’s birthday. This type of session is usually booked to mark your baby turning 1, but you can book this to celebrate your little one’s 2nd, 3rd, 4th (… and so on) birthday.

What is a cake smash photoshoot?

My sessions are genuinely everything I’ve ever hoped they would be. Whether you opt to have the three elements included or are looking for something more personalised, you’ll walk away with a beautiful collection of memories to fill your heart and your home.

This type of photoshoot is an opportunity to capture beautiful baby portraits combined with the fun and messy cake smash element, and a mini bath for your little one to end the session splashing around with bubbles.

A small, simple cake is included like the one in this photo (I usually order it in advance and can provide the list of ingredients if needed). If you need an ingredient-free cake to cater for any allergies, I will ask that you provide that on the day instead.

The three parts of each session:

  • the mini photoshoot – this is the part for birthday portraits, natural photos of your baby with and without props. It’s also a great opportunity for siblings and parents to join in.
  • the messy time – this is where the fun truly begins. This will probably be the first time when your little one will experience his first bite from a cake; I’ll be camera ready to capture all the expressions, their hands, feet and face covered in birthday cake and you’ll get to watch and soak in all of it.
  • the bubbles and splash – this is the last bit of fun for your little one as they’ll splash around in the bubbles. As a bonus, this usually cleans up all the sticky mess from the cake and also makes little ones ready for a nap afterwards… it’s a win win win situation.

How to prepare for your little one’s cake smash

Something to consider is the timing of the session: some parents prefer to book a session on or around their little one’s birthday, whereas other prefer to schedule a session in advance so the photos are ready to share with friends and family on birthday invites or at the birthday party itself.

Upon booking, we will go over the different backgrounds and props available. A few days before the session, I will send a gentle reminder which will give you the opportunity to start preparing for the day and ask any last minute questions too.

On the day:

  • I always encourage parents, older brothers and sisters to join in for a few shots during the first part of the session. Coordinating outfits will make a huge difference to how the photos will turn out, so keep this in mind.
  • Bring some of your little one’s favourite snacks and treats. Some toddlers are not huge fans of new textures or sweetness, so a good back-up plan is to stick their favourite treats in the cake. Before you know it, they’ll dive right in.
  • Bring a change of clothes … for everyone!. Little ones get very (very!) messy during a cake smash shoot and more often than not, icing in the grips of tiny fingers will end up spread everywhere, including all over you.

I hope this gives you an idea of what a cake smash photoshoot is and what you can expect from a session with me. If you have any questions or would like to book a session, I cannot wait to hear from you.
