INVEST IN your MEMORIES

The ins and outs – everything you need to know before booking a newborn session

A newborn baby is the most wonderful gift – those little toes and cute grimaces, that extra fine hair all-over and newborn smell, all details that you’d wish could last forever. A newborn session gives you a chance to capture these precious moments in time. As a mummy myself, I know how special these little details are.

The first few days (and weeks!) pass by in a blur of cluster feeding, sleepless nights, midwife visits and friends and family wanting to meet your little one. The newborn stage will be gone in the blink of an eye, which is why it’s so important to book your session in advance where possible.

What does a newborn session look like?

Sessions take place in my studio, where everything can be prepped and set before your arrival. The space is peaceful and relaxing, so you can feel at ease watching your session unfold.

You will spend approx. 2 hours with me as I focus on documenting all the tiny details of your baby all whilst taking their lead – no forced poses. Having a wider timeframe allows enough time for parents, big brothers and sisters to join in and enjoy the experience together as a family.

You might have heard that it’s best to capture your little one in the first two weeks to get those real sleepy photos. Personally, I love those first few weeks and think you can still get these shots with older babies (perhaps with an extra touch of patience), so my sessions are actually suitable for little ones up to 12 – 14 weeks old.

Preparing for your newborn session

Before the session, I will send over a booking form and we will go over the style and type of images you love so we can capture moments that you will cherish forever. I know how chaotic those first few days and weeks with a newborn can be, so this can help prep in advance and have one less thing to worry about.

A week before the session, I will send a gentle reminder along with access to my Newborn Session Prep Guide. This will give you the information you need to start preparing for the day and open the opportunity to ask any last minute questions too. A couple of notes:

  • Milk drunk babies are usually the best to photograph. You know your baby best, so you may want to feed them either before leaving your home or on arrival to make sure they are perfectly sleepy for the session. Either option is absolutely fine so please don’t worry too much about this; all my newborn sessions are baby-led, with plenty of time for feeding and comforting.
  • I always encourage the parents and older brothers and sisters to join in for a few shots. These photos are all about capturing the love and bond between your family. I promise there will be no forced smiles or uncomfortable poses!

I hope this gives you an idea of what you can expect from a newborn session with me. If you have any questions or would like to book a session, get in touch.
