What to wear for your session. From colours to layering, this blog will help inspire the perfect outfits for your session.

Styling guide for autumn photoshoots

First of all, thank you for booking an outdoors session with me. I cannot wait to spend some time with you all and capture precious memories as the seasons change.

During your session, I want you to relax, enjoy the fresh air and most importantly, have fun. When you look back at your photos in 2, 5 or 10 years time, I don’t want you to think “ah, what on Earth did I wear?!”. Instead, I want you to remember the love, connection and beautiful emotions surrounding you and your family on that day. Wearing something timeless will help us achieve this. Finding the perfect outfits for your family session may take a little bit of time, but don’t get overwhelmed. This guide is here to help you.

It’s all about colours and layers

The key is to reflect the colours of the season in your outfits by pairing neutrals with a hint of colour (think muted colours such as white, grey or cream, tan, mustard, burgundy, khaki, navy blue etc.). I always suggest adding layers to your outfits. Not only will they will you warm, but layers photograph really lovely. Layers like cardigans, thin jackets and vests are the perfect finishing touch.

Below are some examples of colour pallets and outfits to inspire your choices for the photoshoot.

5 quick tips for planning family outfits

  • Coordinate, don’t match. Find a color palette you love and combine pieces that compliment one another. Avoid matchy-matchy, bright red or black on black as your main colours.
  • Avoid logos and lots of patterns. A good rule of thumb is to have one (max two) patterned outfits for every three people included in the session. Floral prints, vertical stripes, light plaids work great. You can start by finding a floral dress (for either mum or daughter) and build the rest of the outfits surrounding it by pulling colours out of the dress that compliments it.
  • Layers and accessories look fab on camera and they can keep you warm on chilly autumn days. Think hats or headbands, layering necklaces or adding a vest or cardigan to complete your outfits.
  • Wear clothes that are fashionable but functional for the location. We will be in nature and moving around so it’s important you feel comfortable as well.
  • Your shoes matter! Although they probably won’t be in focus in your photos, the wrong shoes will definitely stand out regardless – try to stay away from athletic shoes, character themed shoes or bulky ones too.

Hope the guide has helped with any styling questions you might have. If you feel that you still need a little bit of help with styling or choosing the right outfits for our session together, I’m only a message away.
