Styling guide for Christmas photoshoots

Let me start by saying a big THANK YOU for booking a Christmas mini session with me. I am so excited about this year’s setup (which I’ve been mentally putting together for months now!) and cannot wait to welcome you in the studio, make you feel all Christmassy and capture some magical moments together.

Since running Christmas minis, all my sessions have been filled with laughter and love, which are the perfect combination for some truly heart-warming photos. During your session, I want you to relax and take in all the Christmas sparkle and warmth.

Finding the perfect outfits for your family and especially your little ones can seem a little daunting, but please don’t worry. This blog is here to help you prep for your special holiday photo session.

In tune with this year’s theme

When it comes to Christmas outfits for family photoshoots, there are endless choices to choose from. Whether you want you and your family to be in your cutest Christmas PJ’s or have a more formal photoshoot, there’s really no wrong way to go about it. But it’s always best to think of outfits that will match the concept of the setting, so your family photos can stand the test of time.

This year’s setup is giving the traditional childhood Christmas feeling whilst keeping the décor to a minimum. The focus should always be on your family, not on a busy backdrop or little ones lost in a sea of props.

Below are some examples of colour pallets and outfits to inspire your choices for the day.

6 quick tips for planning your Christmas session outfits

  • Co-ordinate. It’s important to ensure that outfits blends together well. Co-ordinating outfits is an easy way to create a unified look. This doesn’t mean everyone should wear exactly the same colours and tones but it does mean that what you wear for your photoshoot should complement one another.
  • The simpler, the better. The focus of these photos should be on you and your little ones, on capturing your emotions and joy. Logos and patterns can draw attention away so wearing plain clothing helps to avoid distractions. That said, Tartan is very traditional around this time and can work very well (just don’t overdo it!).
  • Dress for the season. There’s so much you can incorporate in a festive shoot: woolly hats and scarves can add some lovely textures and give dimension to close-ups; matching PJ’s can give a cosy feel to your photos; knitted jumpers can give the appearance of warmth; festive green, reds and navies can accentuate the traditional Christmas vibes.
  • Feel comfortable. Plan outfits that are fashionable, but also comfortable. This is especially important for young children. If they find their outfit irritating, they will likely be fidgety and fussy throughout the session.
  • Shoes matter. Although they probably won’t be in focus in your photos, the wrong shoes will definitely stand out regardless. Go classic, sparkly or even barefoot for this type of session.
  • Think timeless. Lastly, try to avoid wearing the latest fashion, especially if it’s more unique. A classic style and timeless clothing such as jeans paired with a cream knitted jumper will still look good displayed in your home in years to come.

I hope the guide has helped with any styling questions you might have ahead of your Christmas photoshoot. If you feel that you still need a little bit of help with styling or choosing the right outfits for our session together, I’m only a message away.
